The Dilophosaurus dinosaur pattern is one of 6 quilt patterns in textile artist Annette Frye’s new series Mighty Magnus. The pattern (available as a downloadable PDF pattern) starts with a simple freezer paper template piecing to create six Dilophosaurus panels and then adds traditional sashing, floating cornerstones, and a border to finish the quilt top. The pupil, nostrils, lips & teeth are attached using raw-edge applique. The panel may look like foundation paper piecing, but it’s not. This is traditional piecing using freezer paper as your templates. If you can put 2 pieces of fabric together with a quarter-inch seam allowance, you can do this!
Quilting fabric that works well with these quilt patterns includes ombre prints such as Stonehenge Ombres (Northcott) and solids or textured solids such as Shadow Play (Maywood Studios), Painter’s Palette solids (Paintbrush Studio Fabrics), Robert Kaufman’s KONA Cottons, or Moda’s Bella Solids.
To make a quilt with all 6 quilt patterns, you can purchase the full set. Check out my shop for the item that includes all 6 patterns.
Special Notes:
- This pattern purchase is only for the Dilophosaurus design and includes directions to complete a 63″ x 74.5″ quilt (6 panels of the same dinosaur).
- You’ll find time-saving tips throughout these patterns.
- While you may print out the entire instructions on regular paper for your use, you’ll only need to print out the pattern at the back of the instructions on freezer paper. Here are the page numbers to print out on freezer paper for this dinosaur: Dilophosaurus- pages 7-11
