Garnet Piece Plan

There Are Several Ways To Piece The Three Sections Of The Garnet Birthstone. This Is  Just One Of Them. Enjoy The Process!

Section 1

  • Sew together 1-1 and 1-2 (Creating Unit 1:2)
  • Sew together 1-3 and 1-4 (Creating Unit 3:4)
  • Sew together 1-5 and 1-6 (Creating Unit 5:6)
  • Sew together 1-7 and 1-8 (Creating Unit 7:8)
  • Sew together 1-9, 1-10, and 1-11 (Creating Unit 9:11)
  • Sew together 1-13 and 1-14 (Creating Unit 13:14)
  • Sew together 1-12 to Unit 13:14 (Creating Unit 12:14)
  • Now you can sew the following units together…

Now you can sew the following units together…

  • Sew Unit 1:2 to Unit 3:4 (Creating Unit 1:4)
  • Sew Unit 5:6 to Unit 1:4 (Creating Unit 1:6)
  • Sew Unit 7:8 to Unit 1:6 (Creating Unit 1:8)
  • Sew Unit 9:11 to Unit 12:14 (Creating Unit 9:14)
  • Sew Unit 1:8 to Unit 9:14 (Creating Unit 1:14)
     
  • Use your fabric marking pencils to mark the hash marks on all seam allowances of Unit 1:14 and on facet 1-15 (the black background piece)
  • Clip seam allowance of 1-15 (background) at ¼” intervals to ease piecing
  • Remove the freezer paper from all facets
  • Sew Unit 1:14 to facet 1-15 by gently easing the black background fabric around the gentle curve of Unit 1:14, pinning generously

Section 2

  • Sew together 2-1 and 2-2 (Creating Unit 1:2)
  • Sew together 2-3 and 2-4 (Creating Unit 3:4)
  • Sew together 2-5 and 2-6 (Creating Unit 5:6)
  • Set aside 2-7; we’ll come back to it in a moment
     
  • Sew together 2-8 and 2-9 (Creating Unit 8:9)
  • Sew together 2-10 to Unit 8:9 (Creating Unit 8:10)
  • Sew together 2-11 to Unit 8:10 (Creating 8:11)
  • Set aside 2-12; we’ll come back to it in a moment
  • Sew together 2-13 and 2-14 (Creating Unit 13:14)
  • Sew together 2-15, 2-16, and 2-17 (Creating Unit 15:17)
  • Set aside Unit 2-18; we’ll come back to it in a moment
  • Sew together 2-19 and 2-20 (Creating Unit 19:20)
     
  • Sew together 2-21, 2-22, 2-23, and 2-24 (Creating Unit 21:24)
  • Sew together 2-25 to Unit 21:24 (Creating Unit 21:25)
  • Sew together 2-26 to Unit 21:25 (Creating Unit 21:26)

  • Sew together Unit 21:27 and Unit 28:30 (Creating Unit 21:30)
     
  • Sew together Unit 1:7, Unit 8:20, and Unit 21:30 (Creating Unit 1:30)
     
  • Use your fabric marking pencils to mark the hash marks on all seam allowances of Unit 1:30 and facets 2-31 and 2-32 (the black background pieces)
  • Clip seam allowance of 2-31 and 2-32 (background) at ¼” intervals to ease piecing
  • Remove the freezer paper from all facets
  • Sew together Unit 1:30 and facets 2-31 and 2-32 by gently easing the black background fabric around the gentle curve of Unit 1:30, pinning generously

Section 3

  • Sew together 3-1, 3-2, and 3-3 (Creating Unit 1:3)
  • Sew together 3-4, 3-5, 3-6, and 3-7 (Creating Unit 4:7)
     
  • Sew together 3-9, 3-10, and 3-11 (Creating Unit 9:11)
  • Sew 3-8 to Unit 9:11 (Creating Unit 8:11)
     
  • Sew together 3-12, 3-13, and 3-14 (Creating Unit 12:14)
  • Sew 3-15 to Unit 12:14 (Creating Unit 12:15)
  • Sew together 3-16, 3-17, and 3-18 (Creating Unit 16:18)

Now you can sew the following units together…

  • Sew together Unit 1:3 and Unit 4:7 (Creating Unit 1:7)
  • Sew together Unit 8:11 and Unit 12:15 (Creating Unit 8:15)
  • Sew together Unit 1:7, 8:15, and 16:18 (Creating Unit 1:18)
     
  • Use your fabric marking pencils to mark the hash marks on all seam allowances of Unit 1:18 and facet 3-19 (the black background piece)
  • Clip seam allowance of 3-19 (background) at ¼” intervals to ease piecing
  • Remove the freezer paper from all facets
  • Sew together Unit 1:18 and facets 3-19 by gently easing the black background fabric around the gentle curve of Unit 1:18, pinning generously
     
  • Finally, piece your three major sections together, making sure that the edge of the Garnet and black background aligns at the seam lines.
     
  • If the Garnet edges do not match up, check the facets along the seam lines for gaps. You may be able to ease fullness into the seam line instead of resewing.
