Emerald Piece Plan

There Are Several Ways To Piece The Four Sections Of The Emerald Birthstone. This Is  Just One Of Them. Enjoy The Process!

Section 1

Let’s start by piecing together the smallest units first…

  • Set aside 1-1 and 1-2; we’ll get back to them in a moment
  • Sew together 1-3, 1-4, and 1-5 (Creating Unit 3:5)
  • Sew together 1-6, 1-7, and 1-8 (Creating Unit 6:8)
  • Set aside 1-9; we’ll get back to it in a moment
  • Sew together 1-10 and 1-11 (Creating Unit 10:11)
  • Sew together 1-12 and 1-13 (Creating Unit 12:13)

Now you can sew the following units together…

  • Sew 1-2 to Unit 3:5 (Creating Unit 2:5)
  • Sew Unit 2:5 to Unit 6:8 (Creating Unit 2:8)
  • Sew 1-9 to Unit 2:8 (Creating Unit 2:9)
  • Sew Unit 10:11 to Unit 2:9 (Creating Unit 2:11)
  • Sew Unit 12:13 to Unit 2:11 (Creating Unit 2:13)
  • Top it all off by sewing 1-1 to Unit 2:13 to complete Section 1

Section 2

Let’s start by piecing together the smallest units first…

  • Sew together 2-1 and 2-2 (Creating Unit 1:2)
  • Sew together 2-3 and 2-4 (Creating Unit 3:4)
  • Sew together 2-5, 2-6, and 2-7 (Creating Unit 5:7)
  • Sew together 2-8, 2-9, and 2-10 (Creating Unit 8:10)
  • Sew together 2-11, 2-12, and 2-13 (Creating 11:13)
  • Set 2-14 aside; we’ll come back to it later
  • Sew together 2-15 and 2-16 (Creating 15:16)

Now you can sew the following units together…

  • Sew together Unit 3:4 and Unit 5:7 (Creating 3:7)
  • Sew together Unit 3:7 and Unit 8:10 (Creating 3:10)
  • Sew together Unit 3:10 and Unit 11:13 (Creating Unit 3:13)
  • Sew together Unit 3:13 and 2-14 (Creating Unit 3:14)
  • Sew together Unit 3:14 and Unit 15:16 (Creating 3:16)
  • Sew together Unit 1:2 and Unit 3:16 to complete Section 2

Section 3

Let’s start by piecing together the smallest units first…

  • Set 3-1 aside; we’ll come back to it in a moment
  • Sew together 3-2, 3-3, and 3-4 (Creating Unit 2:4)
  • Sew together 3-5 and 3-6 (Creating Unit 5:6)
  • Sew together 3-7, 3-8, and 3-9 (Creating Unit 7:9)
  • Set aside 3-10 and 3-11; we’ll come back to them in a moment

Now you can sew the following units together…

  • Sew together 3-1 and Unit 2:4 (Creating Unit 1:4)
  • Sew together Unit 5:6 and Unit 7:9 (Creating Unit 5:9)
  • Sew together Unit 5:9 and 3-10 (Creating Unit 5:10)
  • Sew together Unit 1:4 and Unit 5:10 (Creating Unit 1:10)
  • Sew together Unit 1:10 and 3-11 (Creating Unit 1:11)
  • Sew together Unit 1:11 and 3-12 to finish Section 3

Section 4

Let’s start by piecing together the smallest units first….

  • Set 4-1 aside; we’ll come back to it in a moment
  • Sew together 4-2, 4-3, and 4-4 (Creating Unit 2:4)
  • Sew together Unit 2:4 and 4-5 (Creating Unit 2:5)
  • Sew together 4-6, 4-7, and 4-8 (Creating Unit 6:8)
  • Sew together 4-9, 4-10, and 4-11 (Creating Unit 9:11)
  • Sew together 4-12 and 4-13 (Creating Unit 12:13)
  • Sew together 4-14 and 4-15 (Creating Unit 14:15)

Now you can sew the following units together…

  • Sew together Unit 2:5 and Unit 6:8 (Creating Unit 2:8)
  • Sew together Unit 2:8 and 9:11 (Creating Unit 2:11)
  • Sew together Unit 2:11 and 12:13 (Creating Unit 2:13)
  • Sew together Unit 2:13 and Unit 14:15 (Creating Unit 2:15)
  • Sew together 4-1 and Unit 2:15 to complete Section 4

Now let’s finish piecing the entire Emerald…

  • Sew together Section 2 and 4
  • Lay Section 3 on top of Section 2, aligning hash marks and pin
  • Starting 1/4″ from the inside edge (where Sections 2, 3, and 4 meet) sew the seam between Sections 2 and 3
  • Press open
  • Now fold the unsewn edge of Section 3 on top of Section 4 (right sides together)
  • Starting 1/4″ from the inside edge (or where you started your last seam) sew the seam between Sections 3 and 4
  • Do the same set-in process with Section 1.
  • Now attach the black background pieces (5-1, 6-1, 7-1, and 8-1) to the corners, as shown on the KEY
